03 · The full journey

Being Us

You've built the life. How are the two of you doing inside it?

Ubud at dusk — stone, water and low light

There is a point in some relationships when “we're good” stops being quite enough.

Nothing is necessarily wrong.

You still love each other.

You still function well together.

But you can feel how easily another year could pass.

Then another.

And you don't want to look back and realise that while you were busy building the life, the two of you stopped being curious about the people living it.

Being Us is for that moment.

This isn't a longer version of The Solas Experience.

It's a private relationship journey that begins before you arrive in Bali, deepens during three nights together in Ubud, and continues once you're home.

Because some things deserve more than a day.

“We learned new things about one another. This was surprising as we’ve been married almost 20 years.”

Before Bali

We start while you're still at home.

Over several private conversations, we get curious about the relationship you're living now.

Not the one you had when you first met.

How well do you know what's happening in each other's lives?

When one of you reaches out, does the other notice?

How does affection land between you?

What happens when you disagree?

What has changed as you've changed?

What do you want more of?

And what have you both been assuming you'll get around to later?

The work is informed by Gottman relationship research, but this isn't a course.

We're not working through a generic relationship curriculum.

We're working with yours.

Then you come to Bali.

For three nights, someone else takes care of the details.

Where you're staying.

Where you're eating.

Where you're going.

What happens next.

Your only job is to show up.

Some of our time together will involve conversation.

Some won't.

There will be experiences chosen for the two of you. Time outside. Good food. Time with me. Plenty of time without me.

You won't spend three days talking about your relationship.

You'll spend three days paying attention to it.

There is a difference.

And then you go home.

This part matters.

Because it's relatively easy to feel close to someone in a beautiful place in Bali.

The test is Tuesday.

The inbox fills up.

The children need something.

Someone's tired.

Dinner needs making.

And life starts moving at its usual speed again.

So we continue.

We look at what came home with you.

What has changed without much effort.

What disappeared the moment normal life returned.

And what the two of you want to keep making room for.

The point of Being Us isn't to have a great relationship experience in Bali.

It's to like the relationship you're living when Bali is over.

What we'll spend time on

Knowing each other now

Not the person you married years ago.

The person sitting beside you today.

Affection and connection

How you reach for one another, and whether those attempts are actually landing.

Conflict and repair

Not how to avoid disagreement.

How to disagree without slowly damaging what sits underneath.

The life between you

The habits, rituals, assumptions and small moments that make the relationship feel like yours.

What comes next

What each of you wants from the years ahead.

And where those two futures meet.

Who it's for

Being Us asks something of both of you.

Time.

Curiosity.

Honesty.

And a willingness to show up.

It isn't crisis intervention and it isn't a substitute for couples therapy.

It's for couples who still choose each other and would rather put time into their relationship now than wait until something forces them to.

If you're reading this thinking:

“Nothing is really wrong. We just don't want to lose what we have.”

You're probably in the right place.
